Emily "Bumpy" Mitchell Obituary

Emily “Bumpy” Lois Mitchell, 76, of Danville, formerly of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away at 9:49 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2024, OSF Sacred Heart of Mary Medical Center, in Danville.

She was born on November 8, 1947, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the daughter of Arthur Edward and Vera (Ivey) Long.  She was previously married to Garey Poteat, James White and Michael Thomas Mitchell, all who preceded her in death.

She is survived by three daughters- Rhonda (Paul) Hunt of Fithian, Tracey (Emmett) Smith of Binghamton, New York and Kimberly (Dewayne) Poteat-Dutton of Converse, South Carolina; one son- Darrin (Beverly) Poteat of Spartanburg, South Carolina; 32 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother- James Arthur Long of Spartanburg, South Carolina; one sister- Brenda Ruth Cooksey of Spartanburg, South Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and a very special niece who was like a daughter to her- Michelle (Tony) Nicholls of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband’s, two brothers- David Long and Edward Long and one sister- Doris Pack.

Emily graduated from Spartanburg High School.  She worked for most of her life in the restaurant business, in South Carolina, and also helped milk cows.  She was a member of Alvin Church of God.  Emily enjoyed crocheting, buying jewelry, shopping, playing the piano and reading her bible.  She also loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her church family.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Alvin Church of God, 109 South Street, Alvin, IL, with Pastor Dan Hunt officiating.  According to her wishes cremation rites have been arranged by the Blurton Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Emily’s name to the Wounded Warriors Project.  The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home, in Potomac to assist them in honoring Emily’s life.  Condolences may be shared with the family on her everlasting memorial page at:  www.BlurtonFuneralHomes.com.
