Arlene "Maggie" Smith Obituary

Arlene “Maggie” Margaret Smith, 84, of Rossville, passed away at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, May 19, 2019, at Carle Foundation Hospital, in Urbana.

Maggie was born on July 13, 1934, in Downers Grove, Illinois, the daughter of Bernard and Blanche (Hodous) Hanson.  She married Obie Smith on December 10, 1953.  He preceded her in death on October 12, 1980.

She is survived by one daughter- Cynthia Smith of Henderson, Texas; three sons- James (Debbie) Smith of Cissna Park, Illinois, Michael (Leonila) Smith of Duncanville, Texas and Bernard (Alora) Smith of Rossville; two sisters- Shirley Newman of Crestwood, Illinois and Murace Bullock of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother- Warren Hanson and sister-Jeanie Parrish.

Maggie worked as a seamstress at several factories in Danville and later worked at Cradco, in Rantoul, for over 20 years until her retirement.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Hoopeston.  Maggie enjoyed volunteering at several area organizations.  She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, quilting, painting, drawing, baking and traveling. 

A Celebration of Arlene “Maggie” Margaret Smith’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at the First Baptist Church, in Hoopeston, with Pastor Adam Taubert officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, at the church.  She will be laid to rest following the service in Floral Hill Cemetery.  The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home, in Hoopeston, to assist them in honoring Maggie’s life.  Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church.  Memories or photos may be shared with the family on her everlasting memorial page at:  www.BlurtonFuneralHomes.com.
