Evelyn M. (Cox) Swartz 95, died peacefully of natural causes at Heritage Health in Hoopeston, Illinois on August 24, 2017. Her son Lyndon and nephew Ross Swartz and his wife Diane were by her side.
Born January 21, 1922 Evelyn Cox Swartz was a longtime member of Hoopeston First Christian Church. Evelyn graduated from Hoopeston High school in 1940 and then attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois . She taught elementary school at Honeywell School for over 6 decades from 1941until she retired in 1994. In 1942 she was the first of any local women to join the Marines . She was always the proud Marine. In 1947, she married Donald Swartz, a farmer in Prairie Green . While teaching and raising her family she also assisted as a local 4H leader and vacation Bible school classes for several years. Evelyn lived on the farm until she reluctantly decided to give Country Terrace a try in Hoopeston in 2011.
Mrs. Swartz is survived by her daughter Janie Swartz and her husband John Van Bezooyen of Sonoita, Arizona; her son , Lyndon ( Gretchen ) Swartz of Lodi , Wisconsin and grandsons- Logan Swartz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Lee Swartz of Chicago, Illinois and many devoted nephews and nieces .
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Swartz, her brothers- Wilbur Cox , Kelly Cox jr. and her parents Kelly and Martha (Foxworthy) Cox and a daughter in law-Lisa Mitchell Swartz, as well as her sister-in-laws and Swartz brother-in -laws .
Evelyn loved teaching and loved little kids. She enjoyed cooking, going to the coast of Michigan , playing cards, traveling to different restaurants and telling stories of her days as a Marine in WW2.
A celebration of Evelyn Swartz's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at First Christian Church in Hoopeston with Pastor Tom Cici officiating, Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the church. A friend and family gathering lunch will be held from 11:30 am-1:00 pm at the church. Graveside will be at Floral Hill Cemetery. Military Rites will be accorded with Hoopeston American Legion Post # 384. In lieu of flowers the family is asking memorials be made to First Christian Church, Hoopeston, Illinois or HART (Hoopeston Animal Rescue Team) 901 West Main Street, Hoopeston, IL 60942
