Glenna Ruth (Kentner) Hughes, 99, of Hoopeston, passed away at 1:31 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Hughes was born on July 7, 1918, in Bismarck, the daughter of Charles and Zora (Phipps) Kentner. She married Kenneth Hughes on November 24, 1939, in Bowling Green, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2000.
She is survived by one brother- Lloyd Kentner of Rossville, IL; brother-in-law- Gene (Edna) Hughes of Rossville, IL; nieces and nephews- Dave Johnson of Bridgeview, IL, Lester (Mary) Moore of Rossville, IL, Brian Lanham of Rancho Mirage, CA, Sue (Lonnie) Seymour of Naperville, IL, Rita Armbrust of Salem, IL, Charles (Shirley) Kentner of Rossville, IL, Debbie (Clif) Craig of McHenry, IL, Dianna (Larry) Gernand of Potomac, IL; and many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband-Kenneth and four sisters- Frances Lanham, Zeda Moore, Florence Johnson and June Deck.
Mrs. Hughes graduated from Alvin High School in 1936, as valedictorian. She and Kenneth attended Illinois State University. She taught school at Honeywell Grade School, in Hoopeston, for 36 years, where Kenneth was the principal. She primarily taught 2nd grade during her time there. She was also a member of the First Christian Church in Hoopeston. She was always known as “Aunt Ruthie” to her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed playing Soduko and crossword puzzles from the daily paper.
A Celebration of Glenna Ruth Hughes Life will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2017, at the First Christian Church in Hoopeston, with Pastor Tom Cici officiating. Burial will follow the service at Gundy Cemetery in Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home to assist them in honoring Mrs. Hughes life.
