George W. Mimms Jr., 93, of Potomac, passed away at 3:16 a.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Carle Foundation Hospital, in Urbana.
George was born on December 22, 1929, in Arkansas, the son of Geroge W. and Hallie (Bradshaw) Mimms Sr. He married Betty Jane Johnson on September 3, 1954, in Potomac. She preceded him in death on September 3, 2012.
He is survived by his daughter- Cheryl Brown of Danville; son- Ben Mimms of Indiana; granddaughter- Jessica (Ronnie) Vallad of Potomac; three great-grandchildren- Ethan, Seth and Hayden Johnson; brother- Paul Mimms of Perry, Arkansas; sister- Georgia Crowell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and his nephew- Dave Mimms of Morrilton, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter- Karen Downing, two brothers and one sister.
George graduated from high school in Perry, Arkansas. After high school, he served in the United States Navy. He worked for several years as a lineman for Bell Telephone, until his retirement. After retiring, he worked as a rural mail carrier in the Potomac area. George previously attended the Rossville Church of Christ and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed bowling, spending time with his family, going to any restaurant and he was an avid fisherman. Geroge and Betty also enjoyed traveling to Florida every winter for over 20 years.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2023, at the Potomac Community Building, 310 W. State St., Potomac, Illinois. According to his wishes cremation rites will be arranged by the Blurton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in George’s name to the donor’s choice.
